I'm fairly sure I read this around when it came out (1989) - but when I read it again in 2004, the only one I remembered was "Stealing Souls" - Laurell K. Hamilton's first-ever published story! It's really good - a tough female mercenary on a quest to free the imprisoned souls of her slain sisters, the bard who sings her praises - and a very, very demanding sword... Funny - in the introduction, MZB tells Ms. Hamilton to stay away from those "cliched" elves... Even the best editors can't always be right! (Hamilton's made a load of cash off writing about elves!) A collection I enjoyed more than most. The stories are mostly quite good, some even memorable, although none achieve the numinous heights required for 5 stars. The introductory notes aren't so good: Bradley came across as seeming to think being a jerkhole buffoon is somehow endearing. (I didn't count that against the book; it's just an observation.) ( )
