This picture book written from a sister's perspective to her little brother is one I will always treasure! So beautifully written with gorgeous illustrations, this book is simply lovely! I read it to my littlest brother, and act out the last scene:

"Do you know what I will do when I am grown up and married? I will bring you my baby to hug, just like this."

Sweet sweet memories. ( )

DO YOU KNOW WHAT I'LL DO? by Charlotte Zolotow is a predictable picture book that captures the qualities of being nice to one another. It is about a sister that tells her younger brother everything she would do for him. She tells him she will give him flowers when the flowers grow again in the spring, and in the winter she will build him a snowman. It is pretty predictable because every time she asks him "Do you know what I will do..." she ends up doing it for him. Overall it is a cute book that brings siblings together rather than apart like many other books. A teacher could use this book in the classroom to show that being nice will make everyone happier and that it will help people have good relationship in the world. The illustrations in the book are bold but are on a white sheet of paper making them pop. The artists made the illustrations out of paper and paint to make a collage feel to them. ( )

This is a story about a brother and sister who are best of friends and the sister wants to tell her brother about all of the things she is going to do for him when events occur. As the story evolves, the younger brother, learns to be generous to others, even his sister. The illustrations are pictures of wooden pieces, which is a neat touch to a simple book like this. The way the characters are presented might look goofy but some people might think they are pretty cool to look at, and see the beauty in simplicity. The characters have big smiles on every page, to express their happiness for the generosity that is shown throughout the story. Another thing that is expressed in this story is the importance for siblings and family. The language and sentences that are used in this story aren't very complicated, therefore this would be a good book for young readers to read. DO YOU KNOW WHAT I'LL DO? is a good book for LEA reading and teaching (Leeland, Lewison, & Harste, 2013, p. 50) because the reading is simple enough for children to read on their own, and summarize to someone else. A student has the potential to explain this book, and tell it in their own words because of the simplicity of the words/sentences and pictures. One way for teachers to incorporate the theme of this book, which might be generosity to some, could be to allow students to relate and share a moment when someone did something generous for them. The discussion of generosity can be good for the teacher to bring up because when children know that being nice to someone for no reason is a good thing, and they can do something nice all the time. Brainstorming with the children about ways they can be generous to each other in the classroom or at home is a good way to incorporate something they just learned and learn a life lesson. ( )
