I hadn't read 'The Ungrateful Dead before, but my local library had it on CD. Jamie Vegas is doing one of her live shows when she unintentionally brings two ghosts back. Neither one was a nice man when alive. I don't blame Jamie for not telling the one audience member what her uncle was really saying. The other ghost, whom Jamie dubs 'Chuck,' hangs around to pester her. The young man is rude and arrogant. He believes that necromancers are the servants of the dead.

Jamie can't sic the ghost of Eve Levine on the ghost because Eve is busy elsewhere. Jamie is able to keep him away by burning an herb, but the uncouth creature comes back whenever the herb is finished burning. Jamie's supply is running low. She calls her witch friend, Page Winterbourne, but Paige is busy elsewhere. The call is answered by Paige's ward, Savannah Levine, daughter of the late witch Eve by the equally late sorcerer Kristof Nast.

Savannah is all for getting whatever 'Chuck' wants from his cousin's casket in the family mausoleum. She's bored. Jamie agrees that it would be best to get 'Chuck' out of the way before her beloved Jeremy Danvers and she get together.

'Chuck' has refused to tell Jamie what he wants from the casket or why he wants it. He doesn't believe she needs to know. We get to find out several things, including 'Chuck's' real name. Things get quite tricky for Jamie and Savannah. I really, really enjoyed the ending.

Johanna Parker's narration made the listening even more pleasurable. ( )
