The latest in the "terrifically imaginative" (The Wall Street Journal) Akitada mystery series brings eleventh-century Japan to life I. J. Parker's phenomenal Akitada mystery series has been gaining fans with each new novel. The latest, The Convict's Sword, is the most fully realized installment to date, weaving history, drama, mystery, romance, and adventure into a story of passion and redemption. Well done historical fiction, as always with Parker's Akitada mysteries. However, I found Sugawara as a character a bit more annoying in this 6th entry in the series. He seemed more ineffectual especially regarding his relationship with his wife. The 11th century Japanese attitude towards women is responsible for part of that but he has previously been more of a rebel albeit a quiet one.

The mystery itself was fine although I did foresee some of the solution... ( )

This is the sixth book in the Sugawara Akitada series which takes place in 11th Century Japan.
Sugawara has progressed to a post as senior secretary in the Ministry of Justice, but has made an enemy of his superior. At the same time as working in the Ministry,he is attempting to clear the name of an old friend who has died in exile, for a crime he did not commit.
Tora, his servant is investigating the death of a blind street singer, who he is determined to avenge.
Another well written and researched story of ancient times. ( )

I can hardly praise this title any more highly than I already have praised earlier titles in the series; they are all exquisite. One noteworthy aspect is that the quality of the series is even throughout. They are all suspenseful, highly realistic, full of detail, intellectually fulfilling by way of the unfolding of the analytical thought process of the detective solving these mysteries in a time of no technilogical aids, such a fingerprinting, cell phones, cameras, or DNA matching. One also hears the Japanese social theories and philosophies through this character while also hearing and seeing universal problems and secret pains. Wonderful detail delivers a delightful and realistic experience in each novel. ( )
