Contra todo pronóstico Marcel Ferón ha hecho una vida “normal” en un bucólico suburbio francés de las Ardenas. Pero el 10 de mayo de 1940, cuando se acercan los tanques nazis, este hombre tímido y feliz debe abandonar su hogar y enfrentarse al “Destino” que secretamente ha esperado. Published in 1961, this is the story of Marcel Féron, who flees his home by train with a group of Belgians at the start of WWII. He is separated from his wife and daughter and is befriended by a mysterious woman. This is a novel of the dissociation that can occur when life is suddenly and traumatically disrupted.

When the Germans invade Belgium, Marcel escapes into an ambiguous zone, very unlike his normal life, where he finds himself no longer in control. He finds this state oddly “freeing.” He no longer feels the weight of his responsibilities and acts on his whims. The focus of the book is his unusual relationship with the enigmatic woman.

The war is kept mostly at a distance, with only a few disturbing scenes. It is a psychological portrayal of a man under stress. During a period of upheaval, some people find ways to rise above these pressures. Others do not. Something happens toward the end that will make everything clear to the reader.

It has all the components I want in a good novel. The voice is unique and compelling, there is a conflict that the character struggles with during the whole of the plot, a satisfying twist at the end and unique description that brings life into focus in new ways. I can see why this author inspired so many other great writers. ( )

Terne et timide, Marcel Féron vit une vie sans histoire. Sa santé précaire, le rejet de ses parents, son handicap visuel font qu'il ne prend pas de risque. Au contraire, il s'émerveille d'avoir femme, enfant et situation. C'est pourquoi il s'étonne lui-même, lors de l'invasion des Allemands, de non seulement se trouver du courage, mais de prendre les devants et de vivre une histoire d'amour comme il n'en aurait jamais rêvé.
Simenon fait un merveilleux travail de communiquer l'instant présent : ce moment qu'il est tellement difficile de toucher tant il est transitoire, disparu à peine consommé. Et pourtant, c'est toute la beauté de l'amour d'Anna et de Marcel: il s'inscrit dans le maintenant car il n'aura jamais d'histoire ni de lendemain, un amour clandestin qui ne peut exister qu'en dehors de la vie bien rangée de Marcel.
La fin, si douce amère qu'elle est, ne peut ainsi être autrement. La relation entre les deux personnages ne peut perdurer au-delà de cet infime espace-temps.
C'est un tout petit roman. Tout en douceur qui fait appel aux cinq sens et qui s'étiole pour terminer dans un sanglot. Simenon est un vrai maître de l'écriture. ( )
