TineOliver: Any selection (or the complete set) of the tales from the Arabian Nights would be a good complement to Aesop's fables. Although the tales from the nights are much longer and more detailed, they also contain moralistic stories, however these are based on Arabic traditions.… (altro)
BeeQuiet: Though unsuitable for youngsters due to its basis in letter form as opposed to short fables, this is good for people wanting a different outlook on life. It can encourage tolerance to your own misfortune and an appreciation of other's.
I can guarantee that my 24 Hour Readathon didn't start in a positive way 😂 At some point I fell asleep twice while trying to finish this book (from 14% of the ebook). I guess I shouldn't have started the Readathon while being so tired and sleepy and I honestly didn't enjoy this book right from the beginning (I've started it like a week ago). I suppose that boring is the right adjective and now I know better that I should have dropped it for the sake of the life in me and my poor Readathon 😂 ( )
Selvom jeg selvfølgelig kendte navnet Æsop i forvejen, så var det egentlig ikke meget jeg vidste om ham eller hans værk, før jeg tog fat på denne samling. Fablerne er nyoversat af Carsten Weber-Nielsen, der også har skrevet indledning og stået for udvalget.
Udvalget? Ja, udvalget. Selvom Æsop menes at være en virkelig historisk person, der sandsynligvis er ophavsmand til nogle af de historier, han tilskrives, så kender man ikke skrifter fra ham selv. Han var i lige så høj grad en mytologisk skikkelse, som man altid kunne tilskrive de små moralske fortællinger, der faldt inden for den brede genre af fabler. De blev fortalt og gengivet i antikke forfatteres værker, og efterhånden blev der også udarbejdet samlinger, hvor man finder klassikere som ræven, der mener at rønnebærrene er sure, drengen, der råber ulven kommer, eller gåsen, der ligger guldæg.
Weber-Nielsen er inspireret af en engelsk antologi redigeret af Laura Gibbs, hvor de 600 udvalgte fabler er organiseret tematisk. På den måde er det muligt at sammenligne på tværs af de vigtigste kilder, som både omfatter samlinger med rødder i antikken og fabler fra navngivne forfattere som Phaedrus og Babrios. Nogle har et tydeligt kristent indhold, men de fleste forholder sig til den antikke gudeverden, hvis de da overhovedet har et religiøst ophæng.

De er for korte og for allegoriske til at give karaktererne en egen personlighed, og selvom jeg læste bogen i små bider, så flyder fablerne sammen. Og så gør moralerne ikke noget godt. Til gengæld er det et smukt bogværk, og det er en stor kvalitet, at der er medtaget så mange illustrationer fra to senmiddelalderlige udgaver af Æsop. ( )
A book that should be read repeatedly to children. The stories are concise and bear a lot of life lessons. I read some stories in this book that were repeatedly told by my parents when I was a kid. I never knew they originated from this book. ( )
