Malcolm Bosse's beautiful book, written in 1981, came to mind when (9/29/07) I read an Associated Press article about the vast numbers of aged prisoners, many ill, who languish in prisons today. "The 79 Squares" pairs an adolescent on the cusp of becoming a gang member with an elderly man, paroled to he custody of his daughter in the waning months of his life. These months Eric, the boy, is directed by Mr. Beck to closely observe whatever is visible in each of the 79 squares he has marked off in the garden. His family, his parole officer and his adolescent pals all fail to understand what is going on, and, indeed, the boys wreak havoc, causing grave harm to the old man and the boy. But as readers we know what has been accomplished. And, now, in the "real world," we wonder if some of the men languishing in jails might not, in fact, be able to similarly mentor our adolescents. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

To the bafflement of his parents, gang, and probation officer, visiting an ostracized, cantankerous old man and his garden becomes very important to 14-year-old Eric. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
