HISTORICAL NOTE Il lancio del primo satellite americano, l'Explorer I, era previsto in origine per la notte di mercoledì 29 gennaio 1958. Nella tarda serata venne rinviato al giorno seguente, con la motivazione del cattivo tempo. Gli osservatori presenti a Cape Canaveral rimasero perplessi perchè era una magnifica giornata di sole. Ma l'esercito affermò che una particolare corrente d'alta quota chiamate "jetstream" era sfavorevole. La notte successiva ci fu un altro rinvio, sempre per la stessa ragione. Il lancio venne finalmente effettuato venerdì 31 gennaio.
