The first book-length critical study of the theology of Charles G. Finney. Trained as a legal apprentice, Finney underwent a dramatic conversion to Christianity in 1821, at the age of 29. Throughout his long subsequent career as revivalist, professor, and president of Oberlin College, he produced an innovative evangelical theology that proclaimed religious revival and social reform as the legal means for establishing God's moral government on earth. He briefly discusses the historical religious context to which Finney was born and lived (chapter 1), his early life and vocation, and his conversion and theology using Finney's writings, for example, his autobiography, Skeletons, and Systematic Theology, as sources (chapter 2-4). He also discusses Finney's view of the Humans Condition (chapter 5), the Plan of Salvation (chapter 6), and the Duty of Perfection (chapter 7).
I recommend this book for anyone who wants a better and clear understanding of Finney's theology and revival methods, and especially, his understanding and use of the Law in his preaching and teaching. ( )
