Although clearly meant for preschoolers or kindergarteners, The Little Dog Laughed contains some adorable nursery rhymes with illustrations. The book is rather long and probably would not be appropriate to read in one sitting. However, I could see this as a good book to keep if you are looking to do a short read-aloud or need to give students a break. This book could also be used for more academic purposes to show kindergarteners how illustrations and text can be used in conjunction to support one another. If I were to use this in my own classroom, I might read a few of the nursery rhymes and do a think aloud with them that notices how the images complement what the text is saying. Then, I might have the students think of another nursery rhyme that they could draw illustrations for and create some of those illustrations to accompany the text.

This book is a collection of every nursery rhyme you have ever heard of and some that you haven’t. It’s filled with long and short poems with very colorful pictures to match. If you’re looking for simple rhymes that any age will enjoy.

I really like poems so I really enjoyed this book. The illistrations were interesting and really complimented the poems. I like that there was a variety of poems including long poems and short poems. They also concerned many different topics which was entertaining for me.

This book would easily fit into any section of poetry you have in your lesson plan. You could also use a single poem from the book if it reflects ideas in your lesson plan. If you did a lesson plan just over nursery rhymes this would also be an ideal book because it contains so many poems.
