This book is a great book about friendship and compassion towards others. It has allowed me to open up my eyes to the world of someone who comes into a completely new environment and doesn't speak English. The little girl who shows compassion towards our main character has a heart of gold and strives to understand the struggles her friend is going through. ( )

This book would be good for primary or intermediate students. It is about a young girl named Blanca who is from Argentina, she comes into an all English speaking classroom, with very little understanding of the English language. The story presents the barriers to communication that English Learners face, and provides tips on how to overcome these barriers. A little girl named Diana becomes friends with Blanca, by striving to learn a few words from Spanish herself and by communicating back and forth with Blanca to help her feel welcomed and included. This was a very helpful book because there are so many English Learners in schools throughout the United States, and it is so important that they feel seen, heard, and valued. I would use this book by having it in my classroom library and to help develop empathy in students to see what another person may be expeiriencing and how they can reach out to help them.

This book was an amazing depiction of how hard and scary it must be for a child who does not speak English to go to a new school in the US. Being surrounded by people you do not understand and having to interpret through body language and pointing is so stressful and this book does a really great job at showing how things can easily be misunderstood bu it is important to keep trying to find a connection with those ELL and find something to relate to. I think this is a great book to read all elementary students to teach them the importance of inclusion and friendship. ( )

Blanca is a new student in class, but she comes from Argentina and doesn't speak English. Diane thinks she's breaking the rules by doodling instead of writing until she realizes how scared Blanca must be not being able to understand anyone. Diane begins drawing pictures to introduce herself and the teacher eventually encourages all the students to learn more about her home country.
