It is refreshingly different and offers a unique twist to the usual mummy story. Perhaps my favorite element of the tale is the rich atmosphere Ms. Rice brings to Edwardian London and Egypt. The characters are well-drawn and believable and easily pull the reader in. The twist to the usual mummy tale creates a different sort of horror than the stereotypical shambling monster of golden-age Hollywood. I have to say I officially can not wait to read the sequel! First Review: Overall, I really liked this book. I would have given it a full 5/5 stars, but there were quite a few parts - especially near the beginning and near the end - where I was reading confused. I personally liked most of the characters, who at first seemed like the normal stereotypes for similar characters, but they eventually showed themselves to be more than the stereotypes. I did really like the plot line as well, but there were quite a few parts where I felt like the story wasn’t going anywhere and not really progressing. Second Review: So upon reading this book for a second time, I still enjoyed the overall plot line. The characters still really annoyed me in general. I think Anne Rice did a good job in world building, but character development was iffy with most of the characters (most of them went downhill rather than having any real/good development, in my opinion).
There is no question about Rice losing any fans with this lightsome, almost chirpily horrorless horror romance: she won't.
