1873 An amateur archaeologist, Andrew North, has gone missing near Salisbury. Meanwhile lawyer Tom Ansell, is on his way to the city on business with Canon Felix Slater. Soon Tom discovers a body. Initially he is thought to be a suspect by Inspector Foster. Then Tom and friend Helen Scott investigate to clear his name.
An enjoyable and well-written historical mystery with its likeable characters. (

The Salisbury Manuscript by Philip Gooden was a sad disappointment. Anticipating an interesting Edwardian historical mystery on the basis of an intriguing opening chapter, I found it instead to be a rather lackluster puzzler. Characterization was cardboard in nature and pacing only picked up at the mid-way point, even then failing to reach anything very interesting at the climax. I can't really recommend this one. (
