Adrian Grimmin's partner, Mandy, died from pneumonia aged 27 in 1988, leaving their two young sons Sam and Eddy feeling hurt and confused. Ginny Perkins, Sam's schoolteacher, worked with the family to produce a book which emphasizes the importance of talking about bereavement and of remembering. Showing the family eating dinner, looking at old family snapshots and preparing for bed, the book illustrates that the ordinary events of life carry on alongside the trauma the family feels. Sam and Eddy's Mum died a year ago. With their dad, they helped to make a special book for her. They talk about how they have made a garden of her favourite flowers, and how they remember their mum at home, at school and at her grave.

This book focuses on life of a family a few years after the death of the mother. The book is illustrated by photographs of the family conducting a day in their life. The children spend the day remembering their mother by: caring for her memorial garden at school; making things for their mother's grave; visiting the grave; looking through family photographs and reminiscing. This book is special in the way it shows how memories can be cherished and provide comfort and a sense of continuity. It also shows that grief is a long-term process. Death is not explained, but this is a worthwhile text for its openness, accessibility, and realism. ( )
