From seedpod to mighty tree, an elm witnesses 250 years of history, as a constantly changing city springs up around it. Growing up beside a quiet country creek, it is eventually surrounded by a potters field, intended for the impoverished victims of the yellow fever. Cemetery is replaced by fields of corn, which give way in turn to a military arsenal, then a children's asylum, and finally to a park. From camping Civil War soldiers to visiting circus elephants, from politicians intent on making speeches to rioting citizens out to cause harm, humanity enacts its many dramas - whether for good or ill - under the elm's massive branches...

A lovely picture-book, from the creators of Hidden on the Mountain and The Grand Mosque of Paris, The Tree is a young person's history of New York City's Madison Square Park, and an examination of the changes brought by urban development. DeSaix's watercolor and oil illustrations have a grave but beautiful quality to them, and are the perfect counterpart to some of the grim events in Ruelle's narrative. The historical note at the back gives more information. All in all, a wonderful book for giving young readers - particularly those from New York - an idea of the scope of history. ( )

Ruelle, Karen Gray. The Tree. New York: Holiday House, 2008. This story is about a tree in New York that is 250 years old. It goes back in history to when it was first planted. The historical context the tree is growing up in is fascinating. The text is a little advanced and this book would be great to use to supplement New York history. Age group: 9-12 years. ( )

The Tree is a book I think students in grades 2nd- 5th would enjoy. The book is fairly large and its pages are mostly filled with pictures. The story and its pictures tell the tale of a 250 year old elm tree in the center of Madison Square Park in New York City. It starts off when tree is still a seed and ends with the tree dying, as it nears its average life span. The story of tree tells of how the area around it has changed, but the tree had remained the same. Over the trees life time the park around it had been a potter's field for unfortunates such as yellow fever victims, a campground for Civil War soldiers, and a gathering spot for political demonstrations. At various times, an orphanage, railroad station, baseball field, upscale hotel, and hippodrome had been built nearby and then gone. A time line of historical events run across the bottom of the page to give the reader more information on the passing of time through the trees life.
The book is useful in that it not only provides information on how a seed becomes a large tree over time, but also shows how the word changes over time too. There is also a section at the back of the book that gives in depth information on Madison Square Park and the true events that have taken place over the last 250 years there.
