The premise of this book is that there haven't been books written giving a history of atheism. Though possibly true at the time this book was written, it certainly is not true now. There have been several recent books on the topic, including Doubt and Freethinkers, both of which are more entertaining and more comprehensive. Overall, not bad, but not a must read. (

(Preface): This Short History of Western Atheism was first published over a quarter of a century ago, at a time when the history of atheism was little explored.

(Introduction): It was common practice until quite recently for apologetic theologians to begin their discussion of the evidence for a religious, and more particularly, a theistic world view with reference to what is known as the argumentum e consensu gentium, the argument from the general consent of mankind.

Many of the issues involved in the dialogue of religion with atheism are as old as thought itself and our study therefore begins where European speculation began; with that awakening of the philosophical spirit among the Ionian physical philosophers during the early part of the sixth century before Christ.
