Summary: This book as a very good table of contents that tells the reader everything that is in the book and where to find it. It begins with cubs and everything someone needs to know about how a mother bear treats her cubs and what baby cubs do. The book continues to tell us about growing up, their coats, paws, claws, hunting, fishing, climbing trees, standing up, swimming, living conditions, and even what bears do to play. I really like that the end of the book includes key words in a glossary and even websites that can be visited for extended learning!

Uses: This would be a great book to use when wanting to study bears by themselves as well as all characteristics of bears. It is also an excellent example of a informational text.

This beginner book would be great in a lower elementary classroom. It is jam-packed with information on bears that would help young students to form a schema of bears. I actually used this book to create a lesson plan for first grade students. The book has a glossary and other text features that can help students learn to use story grammar. ( )
