While set in the 1920s-1940s, Cusack's sort-of-memoir of her time as a teacher - during which she taught at around 14 schools in 22 years - is well-worth reading for its insight into teaching and education, into the development of her political and social conscience, and, to some degree, into her as a writer. A Window in the Dark is Dymphna Cusack's account of her career as a teacher in New South Wales. The book begins when she was a student at Sydney University and ends in Newcastle during the war. A 'window in the dark' was a metaphor she used to describe the teaching process: opening up a window in the minds of her students to develop their thinking.
