I've read the majority of publications that interest me from the Vertigo lineup, so the contents of this book didn't present much of a surprise for me, but it was still an enjoyable read. The editors present each major Vertigo title (and a large gazetteer section of one-offs and special issues) with a brief description, plot outline, major characters list, and memorable moments section - all of which contain an inevitable amount of spoilers, so I surmise that the book is really meant for avid fans as a bit of nostalgia rather than an introduction to the stories. And yet, if they were really publishing for established fans I would expect that the amount of trivia and "new" information should have been far greater. Some of the bigger series like the SAndman and Watchmen have Absolute editions, annotated editions, and academic essays to expand on their lore, but I'm sure that there is much more to explore in the less popular titles as well. Creating that type of comprehensive encyclopedia would have been a much more massive undertaking, though, (in terms of research and with the resulting price tag) so I can understand why they chose to stick with a more brief representation. True fans of a series will inevitably track down as much extra content outside of the comics as they can get their hands on anyways, so we can let this book stand as a worthy introduction to the Vertigo lineup. Though maybe it's time for a revised and updated edition! ( )

I was a Vertigo reader all through the 90's but stopped following the different Vertigo series in the early 2000's. I loved the graphic novels but I shifted my money and time to some other projects/hobbies I got involved in.

This was a great recap of the different Vertigo series that have been published up to about 2007. I caught up on some of the comics I had stopped following and enjoyed reading about ones I had read completely. There were other series in here that I read about that looked good.

A lot of what I used to read has gone back to the main DC universe which I think dilutes the "mature reader" theme (but that's another story). I know Vertigo isn't what it used to be. I've been out of the loop for awhile. This book was fun as it rehashed old memories.

I did not read everything in this book but I read enough to know this was pretty good. It has to go back to the library now, but I might end up revisiting it at some point. ( )
