Recommended Ages: Gr. 6-12 Plot Summary: After a fantastic introduction, each chapter focuses on one story and situation following the words in the title. Excluded - Chinese immigrants, late 1800s Deported - Russian immigrants who were leading union groups, WWI era Denied - Germans immigrants, WWII - had paperwork to enter the US in a year but were refused to get in early after Cuba didn't let them board Detained - Japanese citizens and illegal aliens, WWII, internment camps Exploited - Mexican immigrants, from the mid 1800s to today Setting: Characters: Recurring Themes: safety, land of opportunity, difficulties, oppression, refugee, immigration, hindsight, anarchists, unions, fighting for rights Controversial Issues: don't remember Personal Thoughts: I loved the illustrations and how they were photographs from the time period, but they filled up the whole page and were captioned very nicely. I loved the poems to start the book and the difference in opinion about the ideals represented by the Statue of Liberty from the late 1800s to 2008. But from there, I thought the storytelling was lacking. It was hard to get wrapped up into the one single story chosen to represent the word (Denied, Detained, Deported) and it was also missing the storytelling a tiny bit in the non-fiction history of each story. It was depressing yet very important and it is a great way to get students thinking about these topics. Genre: non-fiction, history Pacing: somewhat slow, the chapters lacked storytelling in my opinion Characters: Frame: Storyline: Activity: This book offers a different perspective to the immigration experiences we've heard in the past. It examines the stories of immigration discrimination and shows a balance to our traditional view of U.S. Immigration history. The stories in this book are true stories of people who were victims of this discrimination. It is well written and includes historic pictures. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
