This book serves as a good introduction to the cultural, geographical, and historical background of the Arctic. Adventurers make an expedition by snowshoes, skis, dogsled, and kayak to visit Arctic lands to see the northern lights, native animals, and native peoples. Despite the illustrations and easy wording of the book, the information is still a bit dry and lacks imagination. A man goes on an expedition to Greenland. Visiting numerous comunities he learns how to survive. On his journey to a distant comunity, taking four months to get there, he comes discouraged, but he finds hope and strength through an unexpected inhabitant- a raven. I think this book would not be understood from the interest grade levels of k-3. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
Home to the musk oxen, narwhal, polar bear, and raven, Greenland-the earth's largest island-seems to hold the magic and mystery of the far north. What would it be like to visit there? To kayak along its remote shores, dogsled through its tundra, visit its tiny villages? With charming linoleum block prints, Kelly Dupre follows the long, difficult journey of two men.In simple words, she captures the tenacity and vitality of all that they see-and subtly reveals to children what can be learned from a place like Greenland. This nonfiction book is the story of Lonnie Dupre and John Hoelscher and their expedition around Greenland. Their expedition took fifteen months, and along the way they met Inuit people, learned how to stay warm in the freezing temperatures, and many other fascinating facts about Greenland. About half way through their expedition Lonnie began to become tired and wanted to quit. Lucky for her she saw a Raven on a mountain top who helped her remember all that she had learned, the people who had helped her prepare for the expedition, and that she could finish even if it was hard. The two travelers ended up finishing their expedition and the story ended with them flying home on a plane excited to tell everyone of their fascinating journey through Greenland.
Personal Reflection:
I really enjoyed reading this book. It not only would be able to keep a child’s attention by the pictures and story, but it gave interesting facts throughout the book about Greenland.
Classroom Extension:
-This book could be used when learning about Greenland.
-This book could be used to teach students about explorations.
