Quando Grady Grubbs torna a casa e trova i suoi familiari torturati e uccisi, non sa cosa pensare. Non sa cosa fare. E quando ammette di essere stato attaccato da creature demoniache, le cose per lui peggiorano. Finisce in un ospedale pischiatrico e, quando viene reputato più sano, va a vivere a casa dello zio Dervish. Lì, Grubbs scoprirà cose terrificanti sulla sua famiglia e sui demoni che lo hanno attaccato.

Se i libri di questo autore che ho letto in passato si concentrano sui Vampiri, questa nuova serie si concentra sui Demoni e sulla malattia della Licantropia.
Proprio come nei libri sui Vampiri, Darren Shan crea il suo universo personale con le proprie caratteristiche e le sue creature, cosa che rendono la storia molto originale.
Quando una persona è affetta da licantropia e diventa un lupomannaro, perde la ragione umana e diventa una bestia assetata di sangue. Chi ha letto i libri precedenti trovarà dei collegamenti con l' "Uomo-Lupo" al Cirque du Freak.
Mi domando come mai questa assoluta differenza tra Vampiri e Lupimannari (che, comunque, restano le mie creature preferite). Sarebbe interessante leggere qualcosa scritto da Darren Shan in cui, invece, i Licantropi hanno comunque la loro parte umana pur trasformandosi.
Un'altra cosa simile agli altri libri è la presenza degli scacchi: se ai Vampiri piace giocare agli scacchi, in questo libro la capacità di gioco è essenziale e potrebbe essere l'unica ancora di salvezza per il protagonista. Mi chiedo se all'autore piaccia giocare agli scacchi, cosa che io non ho mai fatto...
Pur non sapendo le regole del gioco, la mia scena preferita è stata lo scontro mentale tra Lord Loss e Grubbs mentre giocavano. L'ho trovata piuttosto interessante da diversi punti di vista.

Per quanto riguarda i personaggi, ammetto che ancora non so bene cosa pensare di Grubbs. È un ragazzo abbastanza sveglio e intelligente, e questo lo aiuta, ma a volte è anche troppo frettoloso nelle sue scelte. Insomma, non so se mi piace o meno, ecco. Spero di farmi un'idea più chiara con gli altri nove volumi.
Se lo mettiamo assieme a Bill-E, il suo migliore amico, insieme fanno scemo e più scemo. Bill-E davvero non mi piace e spero che cresca un po', perché è peggio di Steve della serie Cirque du Freak. Sperando che non finisca allo stesso modo!
Invece, mi piace molto Dervish, anche se tiene molte cose nascoste a Grubbs, almeno all'inizio. Coraggioso e intelligente, mi piacerebbe molto sapere cos'è successo nel periodo in cui era nel regno di Lord Loss.
E Lord Loss? Be', è un demone, su questo non ci piove. Si nutre della sofferenza altrui, gioca con le sue vittime, ma ha anche lui le sue debolezze. Alla fine, non mi è sembrato imbattibile come si pensava all'inizio, ma è comunque molto pericoloso e non vedo l'ora di sapere cos'ha in serbo per il povero Grubbs!

Penso che lo stile di scrittura di questa serie sia un po' diverso rispetto alle altre serie che ho letto, più maturo e adatto alla nuova storia.
Per leggere il libro in lingua originale ci vuole un buon livello di inglese ma c'è anche una traduzione in italiano, "Il Signore dei Demoni", che si può trovare in biblioteca o usato.

Nel complesso, sono felice di aver cominciato questa serie e spero di poter leggere presto il secondo, anche se le serie già cominciate mi guardano male dagli scaffali! ( )

I've read this two or three times now and even as an adult coming back to it, it's still a bloody, gory ride that is thoroughly entertaining. A really strong start to the series. ( )

I decided to revisit this series for 2 reasons: one, I loved the Cirque du Freak series when I was younger (nostalgia), and two, it's October and the perfect time for some lighthearted spooky fun. The concept for this story is amazing; however, it is definitely written in a style geared for younger readers. I almost wish there were adult versions of these stories but I can't complain too much! Darren Shan captured my 12-year-old heart and my inner-kid still loves it! ( )

This is the first of ten book in the Demonata series. I was very excited to read this but this book was seriously not for me. The writing style is very choppy and just goes from one gory scene to another. I read the first 70 pages and then stopped. Not for me. My son loves the Cirque du Freak books, so I will give it to him...I think it will fit his demographic better.

I disliked this book right from the beginning when Grubbs is getting in trouble for smoking with his friends. This is followed by a scene where he cuts up rats into tiny bits and rubs their guts into his sister’s towel...yuck. It went downhill from there….

I think teen boys might get into this book if they love creepy gorefest reads. This book was seriously not for me. Part of what I really disliked was the writing style. It’s very choppy and full of short sentences that made the story hard to engage with.

Overall I disliked this book. It wasn’t just the gorefest content that bothered me, it was the choppy writing style which was full of short sentences and tough for me to read and stay engaged in. ( )

Wow! I read this series in middle school. All I could remember was the gasps and tears. Now I remember why Darren Shan is my favorite author! I was expecting a horrible, and gruesome "ending", but surprisingly it ended with a happy "ending", making me feel relieved. But of course, no series that I know of that Darren Shan has written ever ends well. I'm anticipating the next book, "Demon Thief!" ( )
