Juvenile Fiction. Juvenile Literature. Sophie and her brother are excited by the arrival of Hanukkah, and they happily clean the cottage and shine the Menorah as their gift to the family. But when their mother shares her worry that they do not have enough cooking oil to last eight days, their father tells them the story behind the holiday celebration and the miracle of the oil. Inspired by the story, the family creates its own Miracle Jar and watches the oil disappear as they enjoy the special food that each day brings. There are so many different cultures, traditions, and religions which in turn make all students have different holiday's. Most little ones don't realize that other people do different things they think what they do for a holiday is what everyone does. This is a great book to open the discussion of the different types of holiday's that people celebrate and why they celebrate them. What a fun unit.

This book does a nice job of explaining the Hanukkah tradition and its origins and the story is pretty good as well. I feel like this story could be relatable for middle elementary though it might only be interesting for the most patient and engaged audience. It's a pretty strait forward narrative. I enjoyed it though, and for the reader that is truly interested in gaining a grasp on the meaning and intent of this Jewish holiday, this will certainly do the trick. ( )

This story is about a modern Jewish family celebrating Hanukkah. They have only a little oil to make their "Hanukkah treats" every night, so they hope for a miracle--that the oil will last. The father gives a quick background on the history of Hanukkah, and the reader sees the family celebrate with the menorah, candles, gifts, dreidel, and special treats. ( )

The story of Hunukkah and the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days is told to the children in this family as they celebrate the holiday. And alongside the historical story, they have their own miracle jar of oil, for there is not enough oil to make eight days' worth of holiday treats. Will the family's jar of miracle oil surprise them, just as it did their ancestors?
