Near the heart of the world's great religions stand saints -- transcendently holy men and women whose "otherness" serves as an example of God's grace to ordinary believers everywhere. As miracle workers, healers, and teachers, saints are the most tangible manifestation of God's loving power. They are deeply mysterious as well, for they are both wholly human and have privileged contact with the divine. SAINTS: THE CHOSEN FEW gathers together the stories of these holy individuals, from all faiths and from around the world: Islam's mystical Sufis; the saints of Christianity, who range from the mystically powerful to the practically helpful; the humble, holy beggars of India; the humanitarian bodhisattvas of Buddhism; the scholars, righteous men, and Hasidim of Judaism. Along with all these spiritual guides are included two living saints, the Dalai Lama and the Hindu avatar, Sathya Sai Baba. And for those intrigued by the power of the saints, there is a guide to specific saints and the miracles they will perform for the faithful. Lavishly illustrated, here is a glorious, multicultural tribute to the God-filled men and women who keep the flame of faith alive among us. Like the saints themselves, SAINTS: THE CHOSEN FEW reminds us that life is wider, deeper, and more mysterious than it often appears in the light of our small, everyday struggles.… (altro)

holiness in major religious traditions
  SrMaryLea | Aug 23, 2023 |
Manuela Dunn-Mascetti’s Saints the Chosen Few is a text that gives account of saints from several faith traditions. Part One covers sainthood in the Christian tradition, the Jewish case, the wonders of Islam, the Hindu path to sainthood, and the Buddhist paradigms of man perfected. While Part Two addresses the question – Is there hope? A who’s who of saints and the graces granted, and miracles and pilgrimages.
The first chapter of this book looks at the otherworldly virtues of saints. Dunn-Mascetti asks, “What is a saint? How would we satisfy the enquirer’s curiosity? Would we answer by saying that saints are mostly historical figures considered holy by one religion or another? Or would we, in fact, have to admit that we really don’t know the answer?” The writer later explained a saint was any individual who is manifestly connected to the sacred reality – in the form of God, gods and goddesses, spiritual powers, or mythical realms – has always been held in veneration by the people. Like us they are human beings – but unlike us they are human incarnations of divine power.
The text itself is interspersed with saintly figures, black and white and color images of all sizes, prayers and rituals, sketches, icons, sites of pilgrimages, temples, synagogues, and churches. The book concludes with an epilogue, index, and acknowledgments. ( )

The stories of the Catholic saints (are there any other kind?), but not enough pictures. A useful reference, nonetheless. ( )
