I and II in resp. 1918 and 1922), became an instant success in Germany after its defeat in World War I. Spengler's description of the end of the Western world and the implication that Germany was part of this larger historical process resonated with the German readers. He described great cultures following a cycle from inception to expansion followed by death. By understanding this cycle, one could reconstruct the past and predict the future. He specifically predicted that in the final stage of Western civilization, in the 20th century, Caesarism, a new and overpowering leadership would arise, replacing individualism, liberalism and democracy. Dé klassieker uit het interbellum blijkt juist in onze tijd weer verrassend relevant. Vele denkers, schrijvers en kunstenaars lieten zich door De ondergang van het Avondland inspireren. Deze eerste Nederlandse vertaling laat een groter publiek kennismaken met de gelaagde wereld van Spengler. In De ondergang van het Avondland schetst Oswald Spengler een meeslepend panorama van de menselijke geschiedenis. Hij laat zien hoe culturen opkomen en vergaan, in een proces dat vergelijkbaar is met de seizoenen. Elke cultuur heeft wel zijn eigen identiteit: zo streefden de antieken naar volledige aanwezigheid en reiken wij in het Westen al vanaf de Vikingen naar de oneindigheid. Maar op grond van de overeenkomsten in ontwikkeling kon Spengler voorspellingen doen over het verdere verloop van onze geschiedenis. Veel van deze voorspellingen zijn honderd jaar later nog schrikbarend actueel. Volgens Spengler is de democratie bijvoorbeeld een voorbijgaande fase in onze cultuur. Politiek zou steeds meer in management veranderen, om over te gaan in een machtsstrijd tussen sterke leiders. Ook ontwierp hij een theorie van culturele verschillen: door culturele verschillen te benadrukken erkennen we enerzijds de ander in zijn eigen identiteit, maar maken we anderzijds overbrugging naar de ander zeer problematisch. Ook vandaag de dag toont Spenglers meesterwerk overtuigend aan dat we onszelf en de wereld om ons heen pas kunnen kennen door onze geschiedenis te begrijpen.
