NBC News's Middle East Bureau Chief, Richard Engel is the only American television reporter to cover the country continuously before, during, and after the 2003 U.S. invasion. Fluent in Arabic, he has had unrivaled access to U.S. military commanders, Sunni insurgents, Shiite militias, Iraqi families, and even President George W. Bush. He has witnessed nearly every major milestone in the war. In vivid, sometimes painful detail, Engel tracks the successes and setbacks of the war. This book is the story of the transformation of a young journalist who moved to the Middle East with the belief that the region would be "the story" of his generation into a seasoned reporter who has at times believed that he would die covering the war. It is about American soldiers, ordinary Iraqis, and especially a few brave individuals on his team who continually risked their lives to make his own daring reporting possible.--From publisher description.… (altro)

there's nothing like getting the viewpoint of a person who's right in the thick of things and understands Arab culture. ( )

From Unadorned Book Review:

War Journal is a truly interesting read. Being the only reporter to have been in Iraq before and throughout the war, Engel has a unique perspective. Facts, experiences, opinions and emotions are expertly weaved into a thrilling, eye-witness account of the Iraq war.

My favorite aspect of this book is the time Engel takes to lay a foundation of understanding. Like myself, many Americans are woefully ignorant to even the basics of Islam and the fundamental differences between Shiite and Sunni, not to mention the complicated relationships between Arab governments and their citizens. This book teaches the reader without patronizing, it feels more like a heartfelt conversation among friends than the heart-wrenching, political yet personal study of war it truly is. I highly recommend this book. ( )

This is not an easy book to read. But is was an amazing story of survival and courage. It's important and as much as possible, unbiased. It's probably the most fleshed out story of what is actually going on in Iraq. ( )
