(p.153) ( ) Beauty-and-the-beast story with a modern twist. Nothomb explicitly alludes to Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris, but there are strong echoes of things like The tin drum as well. Modern literature is awash with ugly central characters, of course, but the approach here is fresh enough to be interesting. Part of the twist is that the ugly narrator, Epiphane/Quasimodo, uses the Amélie-voice we're used to from her autobiographical novels, with its characteristic rhetorical trick of applying the incontrovertible logic of a small child to adult situations. This gives us lots of opportunities for paradox and off-the-cuff satire of the aesthetic values of art-cinema, the fashion industry, and painting, but it also seduces us into engaging our sympathy with Epiphane ("tant de hideur a quelque chose de drôle"), despite all the repulsive things he tells us about himself. Fun, despite the slightly gruesome nature of the plot.
