Following the tragic deaths of his wife and son, antiques dealer Terence Cave is left alone to raise his only daughter, fifteen-year-old Bryony. As the young girl struggles to come to terms with the loss of her twin brother, Reuben, Terence observes changes in her behavior--changes he believes are more dangerous than the common trials of adolescence. In order to protect her, he begins to follow her whenever she leaves the house, becoming increasingly paranoid about her safety.… (altro)

It was a great premise. The writing, though, resulted in everyone just being creepy, predictable stereotypes, and annoying. I wasn't scared at all, and wanted to be. ( )

A grieving parent narrator sends a letter to his daughter describing his trust issues and protective attitude and what went wrong. Why was he losing it. It's more psychological fiction, than psychological thriller, and more poetic, with much phrasing and sentences you want to keep, put would rather go through the plot then come back to it. so more fiction than being a thriller. I would like to be the wise old owl grandmother letting teenagers be themselves as they grow, but I see myself more in the father, who is freaking out, than she. This is a natural demise that we are susceptible to and could happen to anyone. Maybe it's particularly timely for what's going on in the world now. What ideas would go through your head. I'm going to reread this treasure. Hard to do this book justice. ( )

I have deeply mixed feelings about this book. At first, I thought I hated it because the main character is so pathetic; but then I thought about it and it really is a superbly written book. Keeps you turning pages while building this uneasy feeling of hatred towards the narrator. The story is told through the voice of Mr. Cave who owns an antique shop. The book is written as some sort of note left for his teenage daughter Bryony. It centers around the obsession this man develops towards her daughter: it's unbelievably sick and twisted. He develops this jealousy and possessiveness over her that leads to a very predictable ending. Read this in two days and am still getting angry at Mr. Cave's actions. In the very last 2 pages he realizes what he's done and how things should have been: loved that part... ( )

Read this mainly because I so enjoyed another novel by the same author, but didn't like this as well. Although "Possession of Mr. Cave" takes a few rather admirable steps down a psychological fiction rabbit hole, I'd say skip it; read his other book "The Dead Father's Club" instead. ( )

If there is anything that we wish to change in the child, we should first examine it and see whether it is not something that could better be changed in ourselves.

The Development of Personality
But the deep deep tragedies of infancy, as when the child's hands were unlinked for ever from his mother's neck, or his lips for ever from his sister's kisses, these remain lurking below all, and these lurk to the last.
