The quality of the stories is all over the map. In the opinion of this reviewer, most have not aged well and several are DOA. There are two worthwhile stories. 2 out of 16 = .125 so .125 x 5 = .62 and .62 rounded up = 1 so, I’ll give the book one star. If you are looking for a good collection of science fiction short stories, I would recommend you look elsewhere. ( )

Depressing - well, it is SF from early 1970s, so to be expected.
Inclusive - several translated from international writers, five poems, and several published in non-SF magazines, like *Esquire.*
The longest story was military SF so I skipped it - Joe Haldeman's entry.

Slowly I'm working through about 3 dozen SF anthologies, mostly 'best ofs' but also some themed. I'm going by publication date, and I have plenty of stuff from the 70s still ahead of me. I wonder - do anthologists who choose these 'bests' feel the same way the Academy Award committee apparently does, in that award contenders have to be all serious and dramatic? Sometimes funny and happy stories are wonderful, too... wish me luck finding them! ( )
