For centuries, the legendary Protector, Jehrke Victorious, has kept safe the Crossroad of the World--Shasesserre. The City is kept guarded and blanketed from smaller-scale threats to dark magical anomalies. All was calm and peaceful for generations under the peaceful wizardry--until one day, a mysterious stranger brutally murders the Protector. In this tale of Sung in Blood, responsibility now falls on Rider, the slain Protector's son. Presuming responsibilities as Protector of Shasesserre, he dedicates his duty to avenge his father's death. Joined by his loyal companions, Rider is not alone in his search for the killer. His companions are a diverse bunch, which include a shape-shifting imp, a northern barbarian, a wild philosopher, and many others. Together, Rider and his companions battle against the vile minions of the brooding Kralj Odehnal. Soon they will face the ultimate evil, Shai Khe, the merciless sorcerer bent on ruling all of Shasesserre. The desperate mission will be a hard-fought one. They will utilize the sharpest of swords while facing the most powerful of spells. Skyhorse Publishing, under our Night Shade and Talos imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of titles for readers interested in science fiction (space opera, time travel, hard SF, alien invasion, near-future dystopia), fantasy (grimdark, sword and sorcery, contemporary urban fantasy, steampunk, alternative history), and horror (zombies, vampires, and the occult and supernatural), and much more. Pretty poor. Certainly far from the best of Cook's work. It isn't quite clear whether this is part of a series or not, it reads as if it ought to be, but there's no indication that it is. The ending certainly implies that there are other works set in this world.

A wizard dies. His son takes on his responsibilities for ensuring the safety of a city/kingdom surrounded by forces that would rather it wasn' there. The son has a group of friends including for no specified reason an imp. Being friends with the Proptector allows them all to break most of the local rules without fear of repercusions. They have a few scraps with various hirelings before discovering the head honcho.

Meh. The magic system isn't described, the friends are all interchangable, the enemies aren't that clever and don't appear to have any motivation other than do what they're told, even the interactions with the woman aren't well crafted. There's a couple of neat tricks with the imp, but again, most of the consequences of this are ignored.

Probabbyl only of interest as part of a larger series. If it exists. ( )

As far as I know, this is a stand-alone novel. Similar to his Dread Empire series in scale and tone, but much shorter and more direct. Typical good fantasy from Cook, featuring a clever and dedicated hero and his band of companions attempting to find some sort of justice. As is sometimes usual with Cook, its hard to tell just who are the 'good guys' sometimes, but still easy to root for the hero. ( )
