"As high society's social calendar opens up and the Season draws to a close, London is gripped by fear. Someone has taken to stalking women of the night and painting the town red-- in their blood. The name on everyone's lips seems to be 'Jack the Ripper' -- and as a result, the name on Queen Victoria's lips is Phantomhive. Summoned to London to clean up the mess created by this madman, Ciel Phantomhive arrives with Sebastian, his extraordinary butler, at his side to pour him tea, polish his silver, and-- investigate a serial killer. And with the aid (and occasional interference) of a few of the Phantomhive house's numerous acquaintances, little stands in the way of the young earl getting to the bottom of this mystery. However, one question remains-- can he handle the shattering truth behind it?" -- from publisher's web site.… (altro)

lampbane: The relationship between Ciel and Sebastian reminds me very much of the relationship between Alucard and Integra.

Volume #2 was much better developed than #1, so that was definitely a plus. The was a more defined storyline, and the story actually fit the setting (Victorian London), unlike #1. I also enjoyed the new characters- they added some much needed new voices to the text, and I thought they were well done. Also, I'll say I'm really liking Sebastian's character, mostly the idea of him. He reminds me a lot of Bartimaeus from Jonathon Stroud's "The Bartimaeus Trilogy". It's kind of fun to see a suave, demonic, James-Bond-y, Victorian butler fight with silverware and make tea.

However, I'm really not sure where this whole Ciel-Sebastian relationship is going outside of simply their master-butler standing. Everyone talks about the "corset scene", which was really strange and absolutely done to get the reader into a tizzy. It COULD have been seen as funny, if not for the fact that the dialogue has been just as "teasy" throughout both Vol #1 &2. I'm not someone who judges relationships on ages, but Ciel is TWELVE. I really hope I don't see a real romantic relationship begin between a child and a (much older?) demon!
I also wished there was more originality when it came to the Jack the Ripper storyline. I'm a sucker for JTR theories and plots, but this one seemed a bit lackluster. And given the circumstances (Victorian London, demons, rich lords, etc) that was a bit of a let down.

I'm reading this series for fun right now, and with the introduction of the characters from the end of Vol #2, I'll admit that I'm genuinely interested in seeing what happens next. ( )

Master Phantomhive and his…interesting...butler take up – and solve – the case of Jack the Ripper.
I adore this manga. Fun story and gorgeous art. ( )

The art and writing are still pretty bad, but Sebastian/Ciel fans continue to feed because that's really the sole point of this series. And at least we finally get my favorite character, Grell. ( )

I started watching the anime first but have stopped until I get through more of the books. So far I really like it. ( )

I love the devil of a butler. I do not love the cast of characters in this manga. If it weren't for the charismatic butler with his secretive, wicked smile and his dashing ways, I would not be continuing the series.

I found the premise of the story great - the hunt for Jack the Ripper. The execution of the story was a bit confusing and I was often distracted by other things going on in the background of the panels. At times it was a chore to get through. I hope #3 is better. ( )
