I love all of Bob Graham's books but something about this book was special! Bob Graham tells his light-hearted story about a growing family, their dog, and adopted chicken Queenie. In his author note, I discovered Bob Graham had a pet chicken named Brownie McGee that was part of the family-like Queenie was. Queenie became a part of the family when Caitlin's dad saved her from drowning in the pond. Queenie makes herself right at home but Caitlin's mom does not feel right keeping her since she belongs to another family. The family brings Queenie home to her farm and we think that's the end of the story but wait! Queenie leaves her farm home every day to lay her eggs in Bruno's basket. One day chicks are born from underneath Bruno's basket! Caitlin's mom does not feel right about keeping the chicks so the family brings the chicks back to Queenie's farm but Caitlin brings home a baby chick. Now the baby chick is part of the family just as Queenie was. I love how Bob Graham keeps the story going when we think oh no it's the end! This is such a light-hearted book that is great for young children to read! ( )

Um, no. I don't argue that a chicken would make a decent pet. But that it would walk from farm to home every day, and eventually lay fertilized eggs just when the family is too distracted to eat the eggs... no. Love the modern family, though - even though mom has pink hair and dad has an earring doesn't mean they can't raise children well. ( )

After Caitlin’s dad rescued a hen that was drowning in the lake, the family decided to bring the hen home and name her Queenie. Queenie fit in well at their home and even became a part of their family, but Caitlin’s mom said they must take Queenie back to the farm where she came from.
Queenie was so grateful for Caitlin’s family saving her that she ventured back to their house every morning to lay an egg in the dog, Bruno’s, basket. Caitlin always collected the eggs until her baby brother was born and she forgot to keep collecting them. After a while, the eggs hatched and Caitlin’s family brought the chicks back to their mother, Queenie. Caitlin was able to keep one of the chicks and it became part of their family.
Graham tells a lovely story of how a hen becomes part of a family. The illustrations are also colorful and full of life. Once again, Graham created a wonderful book that exhibits his love for animals. ( )

This is a cute little story of a chicken who a father saves and comes to live with the family. After a while, the family realizes "Queenie" needs to go back to her home on a farm where she belongs. Every day, Queenie makes the far journey back to the families house to lay eggs in the dog's bed. After Caitlyn's younger brother is born, the family forgets to collect the eggs and the dog sits on them and they hatch! The family keeps one of the chicks and the story ends with the notion that it starts all over again.

I really enjoyed this book (actually my daughter and I both did)! This is a really cute story about how a dad rescues a hen from drowning and becomes part of their family. The parents realize that Queenie must have a home and they help her find it, but Queenie finds her way back time and time again :-) ( )
