Not for centuries had any man recalled its vital substance or known where to find it, but this book was very old indeed.

For the first time, in this fragment, Lovecraft approaches his evil book (or another book like it) as something other than a given. He revokes its deus ex machina status to explore it from the perspective of someone who has encountered it, and now must relate the awful results. I am so, so sorry this is a fragment. I would have loved to have this whole story. ( )
