Life is good, Herb is partnered again & mom is living in the country. A routine call about a murder soon turns into three sniper attacks simultaneously. Merciless wannabee guns for hire have created a club for killing & Jack is on their list. Following her from the scene to her home, the next 8 hours are kill or be killed with quite a few revelations & surprises and an old foe thrown into the mix. Will Jack and friends survive the night? Thrill ride and non stop action ( ) Wow! This story was crazy wild! A small backstory: Jack is back in yet another harrowing thriller as she is bombarded on all sides by killers! To kick off her bad day is when one of her criminals (Alexandria Kork a/k/a Alex) that she put behind bars and is in a mental institution escapes with the sole intent to not only kill Jack but to kill everyone that was involved in the case of putting her away. Then to make matters worse, Jack is involved in a sniper crime with some of her fellow officers and the snipers get upset with Jack for spoiling their plans so they track her to her house. The tension builds up for Jack when she finally makes it home because she is living with her mother plus her fiancée shows up and she walks into the house where a ticked off mental patient (Alex) is waiting! As things become heated within the house, all hell breaks loose when the snipers show up with plans of their own! A killer in the house and killers outside the house make this day one of the worst for Jack as soon enough everyone she cares about comes to her aid, but end up being targets for all the killers! Thoughts: I was just planning on reading a few chapters when I sat down to read this book, but the author wrote the book in "real time" which every chapter is an hour with a character viewpoint including the killer viewpoints as well and I ended up staying up most of the night reading the story as I couldn't put it down! There is tons of tension, suspense, and action abound within these pages along with psychological terror which kept my insomnia fueled! The humorous quips are back though so there was some light heartedness that kept me chuckling which helped break up the grinding tension of Jack's crazy situation she found herself in, but all in all this book just rocked along with ticked off killers that are ready to take down anything or anyone that gets in their way! The author decided to throw everything at Jack including the kitchen sink in this book which ended up giving my eyes and fingers a major exercise workout for most of the night! :) Giving this one five "Thriller Killers" stars! Fuzzy Navel 4 Stars Life couldn't be better for homicide lieutenant Jack Daniels - a satisfying job, a man who loves her, a house in the 'burbs and a call from the mental hospital with the welcome news that Alex Kork is dead. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end as is evident when a team of vigilante snipers follows Jack home and takes her, and those closest to her, hostage. To top it all off, Alex returns from the dead to make Jack's life even more miserable. To begin with, there aren't as many gruesome descriptions as in the earlier books, which makes one wonder whether Konrath has decided to tone it down. While the tension and suspense are off the charts, and there are some "edge of your seat" moments, the villains are very one-dimensional and the outcome is predictable. Moreover, the Alex Kork storyline is wearing thin and it is time for Konrath to wrap it up. One the more positive side, the quirky cast of characters is what makes this series such a delightful read. Whether it is the tough-as-nails Jack herself, or the self-absorbed Harry McGlade, who always ends up doing something altruistic despite himself, or Jack's obese partner Herb and his terrible eating habits, or Mr. Frisker's the psycho-kitty, each and every one has something to contribute. In terms of the cliffhanger ending, it might have been more irritating if the next book weren't readily available. Although I have my suspicions as to which character has been killed off, mainly because he contributes nothing to the overall storyline, it will be interesting to see if my guess is correct. On a final note, Dick Hill and Susie Breck's narration is fantastic as always and their voices add another layer of enjoyment to the book. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
