The early Welsh religious lyric is a fascinating genre. Composed for the most part by laymen who were professional court poets, it is deeply rooted in the conventions and assumptions of secular praise poetry. At the same time, the orthodox, if somewhat rudimentary, Augustinian theology of the poems illumines the history of lay Christianity in medieval Britain. This volume presents the texts of sixteen religious lyrics of the 12th and 13th centuries, accompanied by fresh and engaging translations which reflect a scholarly command of the language and a sensitivity to the intent and aesthetic of the poets.
