She pours water on her arms and begins flapping. The grocer’s daughter sees her and inquires. The little girl explains what she has done, for the purpose of growing wings, so she may soar over the earth and see the flowers. The grocer’s daughter follows suit, thinking herself more deserving of wings that a goose girl, and using milk instead to water her shoulders. The judge’s daughter, the princess and the queen all follow along. Soon, all the women in the village are trying to grow wings, because each thinks themselves more deserving than the former. Soon, The Spirit in Heaven Who Grows Wings descends and grants one woman wings: the little goose girl. Perhaps the little goose girl receives the reward, because she alone wanted wings to enjoy the earth, not to be better than another girl. I am not completely sure about the moral here, and if there even is one. Asian folklore is difficult for Westerners to understand. I did like the story and the end result. I enjoyed the images of so many Chinese women and girls flapping their arms. The images were beautifully illustrated by Robert Andrew Parker. What made this book stand out, even more than the story itself, was an author’s note in the back of the book, which suggested how to use the book for an interactive story time, by assigning the roles of goose girl, princess, etc. and having children act them out, then awarding the goose girl with a real set of wings in the end. I would definitely use this book for a story hour. Two Stars. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
