The Greenback Era: A Social and Political History of American Finance, 1865-1879, by Irwin Unger (read Feb 25, 2002) This won the 1965 Pulitzer Prize for history, so I read it. It is the 36th history Pulitzer prize-winner I have read, but there are 47 of such I have not read. This book like some other Pulitzer History prize winners I've read, was dry, and it dealt with a subject never high on my interest list (tho I remember I took a course in college called Money and Banking, with some enjoyment). The finance issue I found hard to understand and there in nothing popularizing about the book, which is well-footnoted (with the footnotes on the same page, where footnotes belong), with a large bibliography. I got the copy from a college library, and it appears it has never been checked out before, which in view of its somewhat unexciting subject is not too surprising. The Greenback Era is not a financial history; rather, it is an attempt to locate the source of political power in the crucial Reconstruction years through a socio-economic study of American financial conflict during the years 1865 to 1879.
