I forgot that I had already read High Rise and Concrete Island from Ballard. If I had remembered, I would have passed on this collection. Ballard's writing is good. His story ideas are really interesting too, but he doesn't hold back at all to even give the semblance of believability. That's where things sour for me. All the works I've read from him were so close to being good, but instead they leave me kind of letdown. (

A fascinating collection of some of Ballard's early stories. Very varied, mostly atmospheric, usually weird, always entertaining. Some of these stories are clearly science fiction, others are closer to mood pieces. But the perspective is always a little warped: Ballard rarely approaches his ideas along classic or a straightforward paths. The style is dense, the stories are a little hard to get into, but ultimately left me feeling glad I persevered. Very interesting. (

The best collection of JG Ballard's stories, from his classic period -- the British edition that is.Best stories are: The Terminal Beach, The Drowned Giant, Bilennium and The Illuminated Man (which became The Crystal World). One of the most atypical stories in the Ballard canon is End-Game, which is also very good. The Reptile Enclosure is just maddening, The Delta at Sunset and The Volcano Dances exquisite atmospheric pieces. The Lost Leonardo an adventure. The Gioconda of the Twilight Noon and The Deep End are touching stories with some clear, basic Ballardian themes.A great introduction to JGB's work. (

Si sa che l'attributo "inquietante" viene concesso con molta generosità, e molto spesso a sproposito, agli scrittori di fantascienza; ma nel caso di J. G. Ballard sarebbe difficile trovarne uno più calzante e meritato. Urania, che lo segue dal primo romanzo, ("Il vento dal nulla", 1962), è lieta di presentare questa antologia in cui lo stesso autore ha riordinato dodici suoi tipici racconti. Cinque di questi sono già apparsi in Urania dal 1963 al 1968, altri sono inediti ma in tutti Ballard si riafferma come il grande scrittore, il magico caposcuola che ha aperto alla fantascienza inglese le strade più inusitate e ambigue dell'innaturale, del difforme, dell'allucinato.
