Each of Lara Vapnyar's six stories invites us into a world where food and love intersect, along with the overlapping pleasures and frustrations of Vapnyar's uniquely captivating characters. Meet Nina, a recent arrival from Russia, for whom colorful vegetables represent her own fresh hopes and dreams . . . Luda and Milena, who battle over a widower in their English class with competing recipes for cheese puffs, spinach pies, and meatballs . . . and Sergey, who finds more comfort in the borscht made by a paid female companion than in her sexual ministrations. They all crave the taste and smell of home, wherever--and with whomever--that may turn out to be. A roundup of recipes are the final taste of this delicious collection.… (altro)

sgump: Also a bit offbeat--and filled with enjoyable metaphors (some, in fact, involving food).

I liked these short stories which all center around food and love. Each story was like a little snack - a pastry with a surprisingly savory filling. ( )

I really love reading modern fiction by Russian, Russian-American, and Russian Jewish writers. This is the second book I've read by Vapnyar, and it describes Russian immigrant experiences in America. Some are funny, and some are sad, but they are all well-written. ( )

This is a group of short stories focused on Russian immigrants to New York & their subsequent adjustments (or lack thereof) to their lifestyles. It was a super-quick read. Like two hours quick. So I guess that says something. ( )

This book of short stories from Russian immigran, Lara Vapnyar, is filled with delectable food descriptions as well as characters that exemplifiy the Russian immigrant condition. Vapnyar came from Russia in 1993. She has developed a delightful command of English in fifteen years. Her first collection of stories won several awards and this book seems equally noteworthy. ( )

"Another one, seduced and abandoned," Nina's husband said, pulling a bunch of wilted broccoli from the refrigerator shelf.

"Stop moping and go to Brighton Beach," Pavel would tell him. "You would feel right at home." But Sergey never felt at home there. He loathed the gloomy brownstones, the loud store windows, the honking cars, the gray ocean, the cold sand the color of carpet in a New Jersey home, and the smug, well-fed people smoking by the shining doors of restaurants, picking through piles of fruit, loading heavy bags of food into the trunks of their car. This was the fake Russia, the parody of Russia, that made the real Russia seem even farther away and hopelessly unobtainable.
