Arthur Miller voleva, con questa rappresentazione teatrale, richiamare l’attenzione sulla tragedia di un uomo arrivato a fine carriera con scarse prospettive di lavoro che la società tendeva a emarginare senza offrire le giuste alternative. Miller, con questo dramma, portava alla ribalta un nuovo modo di fare teatro, sollevando contemporaneamente un discorso politico contrario al modello americano, aprendo così un dibattito tra le forze sociali per verificarne l’effettiva validità.
