Pallas and the Centaur is the second part of 'The Botticelli Trilogy.' Following the Pazzi Conspiracy, Florence finds itself at war with Rome and Naples. Lorenzo de' Medici, whose brother was murdered by the Pazzi, has no doubt that he has God on his side. His wife, Clarice, is not so sure. Roman-born and pious she is in every way a medieval woman and believes that the troubles besetting the family are due to Lorenzo's 'heresy', that is, his Platonism. Lorenzo sends her to safety, under the protection of Angelo Poliziano. Powerless against her husband, Clarice sets out to destroy the poet. The domestic conflicts reflect in fact, are intimately connected with world affairs. As Lorenzo's marriage falls apart, so does his hold on the power-politics of Florence and Italy. Events move to dramatic conclusions that explode each character's beliefs and certainties. The war is not just between Florence and Rome but is a battle between the medieval world and the Renaissance, between superstitious Christianity and Christian Platonism, between faith and reason, between a woman and a man. It is the battle of Juno and Zeus.… (altro)

This absorbing, sensitive recreation of Medicean Florence between 1478 and 1480 is an excellent piece of historical fiction. Proud knows both her period and her Neoplatonic philosophy extremely well, but her touch is very deft and her formidable research merely gives a convincingly solid foundation to the rest of the story. It's fresh, vigorous and brings the central characters vividly and sympathetically to life. There's also a steady strain of welcome humour running through, and Proud wisely keeps her story extremely focused, resisting the temptation to name-check too many famous contemporary Florentines. All in all, a wonderful read.

A worthy sequel to the brilliant A Tabernacle for the Sun, this novel widens the scope of the story of Lorenzo de' Medici's Florence by bringing in the stories of four women: Lorenzo's wife Clarice, his mother Lucrezia, poet Angelo Poliziano's sister Maria, and the wife of the fictional narrator of A Tabernacle for the Sun. An intense battle of wills begins between Angelo, deputed to serve as the reluctant tutor of Lorenzo's children when war breaks out between the Pope and Florence, and the conventionally pious Clarice, who in Lorenzo's absence transforms from submissive wife to domineering head of her household. This is a rare feminist historical novel which succeeds in presenting a cast of complex and passionate characters who authentically embody the spirit of their tiime and place.
