It was too short. This book got me hooked and intrigued. I want to know more about the Clock King. I want to understand him more. He was sooooo mysterious. The Queen of the Hourglass was also endearing and also a bit relatable. Ms. Nazarian can turn this to a full length novel and I wouldn't mind a bit. I still have a lot of unanswered questions. ( )

This was a fast and enjoyable read. The sci-fi premise was fantastic. Liaei is a well-developed character and the universe was inventive and unique, but in the end I found myself wanting more to the story and other characters, and a little less philosophy. As usual, the author’s writing is beautiful, and I will continue to read any of her work that I can get my hands on. Received a copy of an eBook from the author through a LibraryThing member giveaway. ( )

This was a nice read and I recommend it to any sci-fi reader; it's a quick read also, compared to typical multi-part sci-fi series. The plot makes it more than sci-fi, as the other readers described it, somehow philosophical. It reminded me of "A brave new world" somehow.
However, I would have liked more: more on the Clock King own history (at least to balance with the Queen of the Hourglass history), something like flashbacks into the past, i.e. the time between now and the story's time... Maybe also something about the previous Queens.
But all in all, time nicely spent.

Liaei hsa been genetically bred to procreate with the Clock King. She has been brought up in an antiseptic world and struggles with the realization that she is completely different from everyone else. Liaei wants to know why these things are the way they are and the only answer is to confront her destiny with the Clock King. ( )
