Barbara Buncle lives in genteel poverty in early 30s rural England. When her finances take a hit, she decides to turn to writing, and her book—written under a nom de plume, is a runaway hit. Only Miss Buncle has based her characters on the people who live in her village, who aren't all best pleased with how they've been portrayed, and shenanigans ensue. This is soufflé light, and there are some parts which are a bit far-fetched, but the whole point of this kind of book is to provide some frothy entertainment where the good end happily and the bad (or at least, the not so nice) end unhappily, and that's the kind of book I needed just now. I'm so happy that I decided to read this book! There is everything I love in this book - it's charming, witty, kind, the characters are interesting and it was fun to read.

It's a story of a woman who desperately needs money so she decides to write a book, and because she has absolutely no imagination, she simply describes her friends and neighbours. Unfortunately, the book becomes a bestseller and people recognise themselves and, let me tell you, they are definitely not happy about the things they read about themselves.

I really liked the doctor's wife, she was so real and nice. The vicar was a wonderful character, full of ideals and very naive. The negative characters seemed a bit too strong for me, a bit too farcical, but I enjoyed them anyway.

It was one of the best books I've read in years and I'm really glad I've finally decided to read it :)

Oh my! What fun this delightful book was! At first I wasn't so sure, but over and over, I laughed aloud. The characterizations were droll, spot-on. Afraid to read the sequel, because I don't see how it could ever match this sweet, clever novel. (

Miss Buncle, now on reduced means, writes a book about the village she lives in. It gets published under the nom du plume "John Smith", and to her surprise is a publishing sensation, turning her fortunes around.

However, not all of the villagers are happy. Miss Buncle has portrayed them as they are, and some take offence, particularly those who are not portrayed in a particularly bad light. ("It's not me, I'm not like that, but it's clearly me and I declare it libel!").

Months are then spent trying to find out who John Smith is and when incorrectly identified, the woman is persecuted, snubbed and her children kidnapped. Meanwhile other more positive outcomes occur as a result of the book - the Colonel and his next door neighbour get married, and the vicar escapes the clutches of a gold digger who thinks he has more money than he does.

And Barbara Buncle gets more than she ever imagined.....

A book within a book, within a book, it is a lovely afternoon read, well worth the republish by Persephone. (

A charming, quick read about a woman who writes a novel based on her hometown. When the townspeople read it, they are largely offended by the characterizations. And also, some of Miss Buncle's story line ends up happening in real life. An amusing fictional account of fiction both imitating and becoming reality. (
