Like many books of its kind, this suffers from a "then they recorded this. then they recorded this. then they recorded this..." repetition. Still, I loved reading about the early years of Sonic Youth, back when Richard Edson was their drummer (long before he played Vito in Do the Right Thing), when Paul Smith was hanging around the band, and before Kim Gordon became an uber-fashionista. A good read about one of the more interesting bands of my time. ( ) Sonic Youth have been one of my favourite bands to listen to or see live for a very long time, but I've never really known that much about the people and stories behind the music. It's not a controversial tale - the intro warns of the lack of sex, drugs, rock & roll - but I did find it endlessly interesting. There is lots of detail about their connections to other people in the music industry, and also in the movie industry etc - some of which, such as Nirvana, I was aware of, but others, such as Sofia Coppola, which I wasn't. Hearing what inspired some of the songs was also fascinating for me. It also tells a story of a certain side of New York from the early 80s until around the time of 9/11 (part of an engine from one of the planes fell on the roof of their studio). nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
The definitive biography of Sonic Youth, architects of noise rock and the most beloved, longest-running house band of Alternative Nation. Sonic Youth's distinctive, uncompromising sounds have provided a map for innumerable musicians who followed, from '90s groundbreakers like Nirvana and Pavement to current faves. More than perhaps any other act, Sonic Youth brought "fringe" art to the mainstream, helping spawn an alternative arts scene that prospers to this day: a world of punk rock, underground films and comics, experimental music, conceptual art, contemporary classical compositions, and even fashion. Here, music writer Browne tells their story, based on extensive research, fresh interviews with the band and those who have worked with them, and unprecedented access to unreleased recordings and documents. This is a detailed portrait of an iconic band and the times they helped create.--From publisher description. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
