Told from six year old, Obioma, perspective of his life in an African Village. He lives in a village in Nigeria called Awkuzu. He describes that every child belongs to a Ogbo, where children are born within a 5 year period. Each Ogbo has a responsibility. His mother Ifeanyi's, Ogbo responsibility is to keep the water clean by sweeping dead leaves and grass from the water. They do it twice a month so they can have clean water to drink. Ogbo are important because it means that you belong to a family, and each family has something to contribute to the Village. Some Ogbo's built homes and centers for the children, others just simply help out one another. At the end of each yer to celebrate a new planting season the African Village holds a masquerade party for each Ogbo. In this African Village they celebrate death. They believe that it is no the time to sorrow but rather celebrate the joyful times and rejoice. It was neat to find out that each Ogbo means something different. It was eye opening to learn a little about the African Culture! I definitely want to read about other cultures. ( )

Each group of children born around the same time are put into a specific group. These groups of people will stay in there individual group until death. They share playtime as little children, share choirs as they grow, and responsibilities to the until community as older groups pass away. ( )

Great book to use when teaching a unit on Africa. This book covers a cultural aspect of a special part of village life. ( )
