I love this book, even though I am not religious. It is a very religious book. But its illustrations are very brilliant. And it tells us how the universe and how our planet was created. But it is in a VERY religious light. I like how it talks about all the nature and animals, but I wouldn't use it in my classroom because children might not be religious. ( )

In the beginning there was nothing, only darkness. Then came light, water, earth, sun, moon, and stars. Creatures swam in the sea, crawled in the grass, and moved over the land. Man and Woman were created to be the keepers of this beauty. All this was a gift to them. Rich in color, shapes, and textures, Gerald McDermott's meditation on the creation story from Genesis is a gift to readers of all ages.

Beautiful, inclusive creation story. I think anyone could appreciate this, regardless of what their beliefs are (religious or scientific) about the creation of the universe. There's a note in the beginning from the author about his intentions:

"These words and images grew out of my desire to cast in a new light the often-told and much beloved story of creation and to welcome everyone, regardless of the direction from which they come, to enter into this ancient mystery with an open heart. The voice of the story is an inner one that begins with a breath and a whisper, a spark ignited within us all that grows to illuminate the universe." ( )
