A pleasant, and now slightly old-fashioned book that would have been right at home in the post-Princess Bride fantasy world of the 1990s. It reminds me strongly of the King's Quest computer games that I loved in my early teen years, and that was enjoyable for me. However, I think it's undeniable that the genre - and satire of it - has moved on a little, and most adults will find themselves expecting more than they get. I'm wondering if it wasn't published as YA because of the slight old-fashionedness, because I think it would still appeal to many teens who would enjoy seeing the familiar medieval fantasy tropes gently upended. I’m not sure what to make of this book. It reads like a children’s book, yet I don’t think that it is intended for children. The characters felt one dimensional, and I struggled to feel invested in the story. That said, it was an interesting ride.
