The organization of this book of poetry impressed me the most. The color coordinated stanzas and span of two pages per poem gives flow to the book and keeps the readers interest. I also like that the book has an overall theme of Halloween and scary tales. It is perfect to read during this particular time of year. I really loved the illustrations because the colors stayed bright and cheerful even though the content was supposed to be creepy and about ghostly monsters.This mixed message may be confusing to others, but if reading it to a child I think it is good tactic because I enjoy poetry that is cheerful rather than dark and depressing.
I don't think there was an overall big idea other than the continuous theme of how the poems seem to be a conversation between two people. ( )

good read aloud poetry book for Halloween

This is an excellent example of poetry. The book goes through many different spooky poems and what makes it even more fun is that it is set up for people to take turns and read together. The poems have a steady rhythm that are easy to feel as you read. The poems often rhyme at the end and have an AB or AAB pattern. Most of these poems are narrative and tell some sort of story. This could be about dragons, or mummys, or something else ghoulish.

There is no particular plot line, setting, character, or point of view as it changes in every poem.

This is a two-voice story written in poetry form. Although the cover says it is full of scary stories, they are mildly frightening on a first grade scale. Some of the poems are about silly dinosaurs and talking broomsticks. What is great about this book is that every poem ends the same way "you read to me, I'll read to you." The illustrations are also worth spending time talking about. There are little pictures near almost every stanza. I would recommend reading a few poems before bed with a student in K-2. ( )

A superb collection of short scary stories for beginning readers focusing on reading together. Since each story is only two pages the majority of the development is done through the pictures. The illustrations move with the two part story to help readers follow what is going on. The color coded text helps two readers to read together through the whole book. This would be an excellent book in a public library for beginning readers and young readers that enjoy reading with others. ( )
