A young girl recounts the heartwarming story of her parents' courtship as her father, an American sailor stationed in Japan, and her mother, a Japanese girl, worry about going on their first dinner date. The sailor worries about looking foolish using chopsticks, and the Japanese girl knows she will be confused by when to use a knife, fork or spoon. This is a book is an older book in the war time frame. It was about a Japanese school girl and a sailor who were in love but neither of them knew how to eat the way the others did. They both learned secretly on their own how to eat how the opposite culture did along with their mannerisms at dinner. This would be a great book for children in upper grades that are learning about Japanese culture during a social studies or geography class. I found it cute how they both took the time to learn about the others culture to feel comfortable and impress them with what they could learn/do. A young girl tells the story of how her parents met. Her mother was a student in Japan and her father was an American sailor on assignment in the area. They were both anxious about what type of meal they were going to eat together, and they tried a traditional meal from each culture. Now in the home they share, they eat both ways on different days.
