Every book tells a story . . .And the 70 titles in the Pocket Penguins series are emblematic of the renowned breadth and quality that formed part of the original Penguin vision in 1935 and that continue to define our publishing today. Together, they tell one version of the unique story of Penguin Books. Multi-million selling author; award-winning filmmaker, performer, activist and scourge of political hypocrites everywhere, Michael Moore is nothing less than a global phenomenon. Stupid White Men- the book they tried to ban in the US - was published by Penguin in the UK in 2002 and has since sold well over 1.5 million copies. Loved this little book.
Despite it is a bit outdated (names of presidents, prime-ministers and dates), it still is very interesting and funny to read.

I sure hope that the facts that Moore states on the educational system are indeed outdated: no more school books / additional educational supplies sponsored by Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Shell, General Motors, Kellogg's, Burger King.
When there's no government money going in, it is great that there is private sponsoring, but I think that shouldn't be allowed as soon as these companies start dictating what the children should learn.

It also shows, that politicians everywhere are like weathercocks: on the one hand they say no to certain developments, but when the consequences of that policy get too close to home, heaven and earth are moved to turn things the other way. Or: (example form the book) Laura Bush kickes off a national campaign for America's libraries, while at the same time her husband cuts the libraries' budget with 19%....

After reading Idiot Nation (Pocket Penguin 70s) I will not be reading the larger work from which it is extracted, Stupid White Men. Why? Because I have just spent the last hour or so working my way through what can only be described as a 56-page incoherent whinge littered with immature and insulting comments. It's awful. Yes, America undoubtedly has its fair share of sociopolitical problems, and of course these issues should be challenged in print, but that does not necessarily entail a childish rant about how America is some kind of totalitarian dystopia! Such rhetoric is not only a vast exaggeration but is wholly unhelpful in the task of remedying the problems, if not actually counterproductive.

I'm British and thus have no patriotic feelings toward America by which I could be personally offended, yet I felt annoyed nonetheless. America, like all nations, is imperfect, and (I'm sure any Americans will forgive me for saying so) its international image is not always too positive, but I'm sorry to say that people like Michael Moore – the kind of sanctimonious whiner only too happy to point out all the faults but who then fails to offer anything even approaching an intelligent solution – are very much part of the problem, not the solution. I have gained one thing from this little extract: I now clearly see that the Extreme Left can be just as unbearably irritating as the Extreme Right!

I like Michael Moore, the world need a few more of his kind. He asks questions that people at the DC top have a hard time anwering.
